Provence Orange 3 nights

La belle vie - biking in Provence

The Provence region is like a living museum of the Roman heyday. But the Middle Ages have also left traces here, with a precious presence of buildings, castles and churches. The town of Orange has around 30.000 inhabitants, and within its city walls you will find, amongst other things, the best preserved antique theatre in France and a Roman arch of triumph. Your hotel for the week, Le Glacier, a cosy and family run establishment, is located in a quiet part of the town, close to a market square and the pedestrian streets of the old town, with a rich choice of restaurants and small shops. On Thursday monings you can experience a genuin Provence market just outside your window. Before departure, you will receive five detaild route descriptions for easy cycled daytrips. The routes serpent through vineyards, olive groves and sunflower fields to the old pope town Avignon, the vineyards of Chateauneuf-du-Pape as well as other less renowned, yet charming, sleepy provencal villages.

Departures (book on request): Every day from the 15th of March until the 1st of November

Itinerary

You will be based in Orange during your whole stay. You will receive 5 different route descriptions to choose from, all tours start and end at Orange.

Day 1: Arrival in Orange
You can fly to Avignon, Marseille, Lyon, Paris or Nice and continue by train to Orange. From the railway station in Orange you walk in approx. 15 min. to the centrally located Hôtel le Glacier.
If you've booked 5 nights or more, there is 1 dinner or lunch of your choice at the hotel included in the price.

Day 2: (Bike delivery and) first biking tour
If you've booked a bicycle, it will be delivered at the hotel at 9 AM the morning after your arrival.

You can choose between the five following itineraries:

Itinerary 1 : Bédarrides – Châteauneuf-du-Pape approx. 43 km
Today’s route will follow small roads on an easy terrain. The first stops are the country towns Jonquières and Bédarrides, with many shops, cafes and restaurants. There is a picnic area beside the roman bridge at Bédarrides. The next town is Châteauneuf-du-Pape. In the 14th century it was here the Pope used to get his wine when he stayed in Avignon. Wonderful wine is still made here today and there will be many opportunities to visit wine producers and wine shops during the day.

Itinerary 2: Beaumes-de-Venise and Vacqueyras approx. 52 km
Todays biking takes you east towards the wine areas of Beaumes-de-Venise and Vacqueyras. Beaumes-de-Venise produces red wine and noble dessert white wine with Muscat grapes. In Vacqueyras they specialize in red wine. Both country towns have small shops, restaurants, cafes and wine shops. The terrain is relatively easy, but slightly uphill before Beaumes-de-Venise.

Itinerary 3: Avignon approx. 31 km (NB: no round trip)
Today you are heading for Avignon. On the way you will bike through the small towns of Caderousse, Roquemaure and Villeneuve-lès-Avignon, where you can get refreshments and enjoy the sights. At the end of the tour you will cycle into Avignon, where you can visit the famous bridge Pont d’Avignon (you might remember the song “Sur le pont d’Avignon, on y danse, on y danse..”?) and the fantastic palace of the Pope from the 14th century. The bridge was opened in 1184 and is actually called Pont Saint Benezet. Today only a part of the bridge remains. To get back to Orange, you will have to take a local train from the railway station in Avignon, taking the bike with you. Alternatively, should you feel particularly energetic, you can return by bike.

Itinerary 4: Uchaux and Sérignan-du-Comtat approx. 28 km
Today’s leg takes you up to the wooded areas north of Orange. The landscape is barer than the other legs, but the terrain is easy with no significant hills. We recommend the country town of Sérignan-du-Comtat for lunch. Here you will find the statue of the scientist Jean-Henry Fabre (1823-1915) in front of the town hall and you can visit a museum in his old house. His great scientific accomplishment is the documentation of the importance of insects. Moreover, he was a poet and a humanist.

Itinerary 5: Camaret - Sainte-Cécile-les-Vignes approx. 46 km
Flat and varied tour which takes you through the cosy country towns of Camaret-sur-Aigues with its beautiful fort walls, Sainte-Cécile-les-Vignes and Rochegude. We recommend this tour on a Saturday morning, when you also can enjoy the little weekly provençal market in Sainte-Cécile-les-Vignes.

Departure day: Departure from Orange or additional nights
After breakfast it’s time either to stay some more days in France or return home.
